Alpha Released

Treyarch just came out with a free alpha version of their new game Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. The game, which has a release date in November of this year, has no clear indication on a beta version and what that could entail for players. Nevertheless, Cold War has familiar features: campaign, multiplayer, zombies, and the battle royale mode from Modern Warfare, Warzone. Currently, the campaign and zombie modes are locked, while players are given access to multiplayer and warzone.

Gameplay

The multiplayer gameplay is more similar to the two previous Call of Duty’s, more detail oriented and focused on tactics instead of gun skill. The pace is right in the middle, slower than older CoDs like MW3, but more fast paced than newer ones, like Modern Warfare. The maps are also heavily detailed compared to what we’re used to, especially for an alpha. It is a seemingly simple game that follows a straight formula, however, it’s the details that make this game what it is.

Create A Class

The create a class system is just like we see in other Call of Dutys, but in this, attachments change the way the weapon looks, feels, and performs. It’s clear to see that attachments will have a big affect on this game, for cosmetic and practical reasons. Other than attachments, Cold War features wildcards, the perk system, lethal, tactical, secondary, and “field upgrade”. Field upgrades are equipment like we have seen in the original Black Ops.

Theme/Tone

Cold War, not surprisingly, has a cold war feel to it, that game features older weapons and items from that time period. Many of the features are actually resemblant of Black Ops with the weapons and how they look. The current version of the game currently has next to no customization, but I expect to see vibes that are nostalgic to Black Ops.

Summary

Cold War is a detailed game with similar characteristics to Modern Warfare and Black Ops 4, but with a similar look to Black Ops. It seems it will be a good blend to some, and a horrible concoction to others, only time will tell what’s in store for the future of this game.
